Scelo Mkhize Attorneys aim to become the most effective legal firm in KwaZulu Natal, which provides services in Labour law, personal injury law, medical law, malicious prosecution and unlawful arrest law and general litigation, with its head QUARTERS in Durban and having branch offices in all major cities of KwaZulu Natal (viz Pietermaritzburg, Richardbay, Newcastle and Portshepstone).

The profession and the background

Scelo Mkhize Attorneys is a sole propriety which was founded on 11 May 2016 by MrScelo Victus Mkhize. Mr Mkhize was born and bred at Emakhuzeni (bulwer ) in the middle of KwaZulu-Natal. After completing matric, Mr Mkhize relocated to Durban to look for job opportunities.

In April 1998, he was appointed as an organizer of Natal General Allied Workers Union. He was involved in recruiting members, servicing members, negotiating on behalf of union members and also representing members at CCMA and Bargaining Councils.

In February 2000, he was appointed as a General Secretary of the union. In addition to the duties mentioned above, he was also responsible to manage the union office in general and to represent union members at Labour Court. That is when he realized that furthering his studies was one of the most important things he had to do. But due to financial difficulties he could not take this any further. However, in 2006, he enrolled for LLB degree at the University of South Africa. He completed his LLB degree in 2011 and graduated in 2012.

In February 2013, he was appointed as an article clerk by the State Attorney in KZN. He was responsible to take instructions from client, institute legal proceedings and representing clients at Magistrates’ Court, briefing Counsels, consulting with clients, attending with Counsel at High Courts, attending arbitration proceedings with Counsels, drafting pleadings and notices, drafting settlement agreements, attending taxation, indexing and paginating of Court files.

In October 2014, Mr Mkhize was appointed by Ethekwini Municipality as a legal advisor in its labour unit. His duties were to advise the Council in all labour matters, initiating disciplinary enquiries, representing the Council at CCMA, Bargaining Councils and Labour Court.

In February 2016, he was appointed as a part-time commissioner at CCMA. This led to his resignation as a legal advisor at Ethekwini Municipality and he established his own legal practice, Scelo Mkhize Attorneys. He is currently a part-time commissioner at CCMA, as well as a panelist in various bargaining councils viz: Public Health and Social Development Sectoral Bargaining Council, Education Labour Relations Council, South African Local Government Bargaining Council, Metal Industries and Engineering Bargaining Council and Safety and Security Sectoral Bargaining Council.
